Mumbai Sailing Updates : April 2009

Over the last weekend…2 major events were undertaken under the burgee of the respected clubs and associations in Mumbai.

Both Match-Racing Nationals as well as Godrej Cup were exciting thanks to the strong winds and up-tight waters…which favored only the strong and smart sailors from the lots.

The finals of the match-racing event were a quick affair with the best teams of the past winning again.

The venue of INWTC was ideal with the the wind and water conditions in that bay providing a unique platform for competition.

Chilka Lake, Orissa – Asia’s largest inland salt-water lagoon

The Chilka Lake in Orissa is Asia’s largest inland salt-water lagoon. Studded with small islands- including the picturesquely-named Honeymoon Island and Breakfast Island- the lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sandy ridge. Indian Finn sailor Nachhatar Singh Johal was so determined to enjoy his first Olympics he risked missing the start of the regatta to be at the opening ceremony.

The 29-year-old, India’s lone sailor at these Games, flew to Beijing to be at the opening ceremony on Friday, a day before the Finn class got started 690-kilometres away in Qingdao.
