Aston Martin boat- Voyage 55 !
Designer Luiz de Basto has revealed a new and rather striking 16-metre boat that reflects the aesthetics of sports cars by English car manufacturer, Aston Martin. The Voyage 55 is sadly not intended for production but is a study of the various and distinctive design features of the more modern Aston Martin range. “This concept is intended as a creative exercise only and as a tribute to the brand by designing a high performance boat inspired by the beautiful lines of the Vantage, Rapide, DBS and Virage,” says Basto. “However, the goal was not only to propose an interesting interpretation of the famous car lines in the water, but design a fully functional boat, able to be built anytime upon request.”
The Voyage 55 includes all the nautical features an owner would expect, while taking into consideration green solutions such as renewable materials. A key element that had to be reflected in the design was the qualities of the Aston Martin brand and to create a timeless look. This has been achieved by incorporating various features of the car range into the boat such as the roofline, front and rear lights, spoiler, bonnet detailing, side ventilation and of course the translation of the iconic grille into the windshield. “With the idea of not merely making a transposition of a car into a boat, like so many other boat designs that pay tribute to famous car manufacturers, the biggest challenge was exactly that, how to best feature the classic Aston Martin icon, the radiator grille,” explains the Miami-based designer. “After several sketches it became obvious that the only solution was to shape the windshield like the radiator.”
The interior cabin space is accessed via a hatch similar to the centre console in the car. Light penetrates through large windows either side of the hull, with inspiration for the shape taken from the engine exit vents. The symmetrical cockpit layout includes large seats, which can be converted into sun pads when required and included on the transom is a retractable swim platform. The exhaust outlet on the boat takes on the shape of the rear brake lights with forward lights fulfilling the same role as that on the cars – navigation. Yellow, orange and green have been used to reflect Aston Martin’s racing team colours, with a white interior. An additional version of the exterior in white and red has also been created.
As part of the objective for the project, it was important that the concept be a viable design that would appeal to the market and adhere to the laws of physics. Taking into account his passion for cars, ownership of an Aston Martin, and having designed sport boats such as the Magnum 44 Banzai and Bestia 51, Basto had all the necessary elements to create the Voyage 55. “I have to admit that I had a lot of fun from start to finish trying to achieve the Voyage 55,” concludes Basto.
