Mumbai planning on a Marina….. Once Again!!!

26 August 2010 2 Comments
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has invited developers to build marina across the state’s 720-km coastline. If things go according to the plan, Mumbai alone may get a few marinas, which will be equipped with restaurants, plazas and water sports facilities.
A marina is a harbour with wharfs keeping boats and yachts, and with services for recreation boating. Normally, a marina has refuelling, washing and repair facilities, ship chandlers, stores and restaurants. A marina has ground facilities like parking lots and boat trailers. Unlike a port, marina does not handle large passenger ships or cargo from freighters.
The minister ports, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, said the authorities were looking to develop marinas at Mandwa, the Gateway of India and at Backbay Reclamation. “It is up to the interested parties to come up with a suitable location and a plan. We have appointed US-based Deloitte as project consultants,” the minister said.
September 24 is the cut-off date for submission of expressions of interest is September 24. Government sources said city could have its first marina in the next two years. It is estimated that a mid-sized marina will call for an investment of about Rs 200-crore.
Experts say there are at least six locations in and around Mumbai where a marina would be feasible. Areas around Girgaum chowpatti, Worli seaface, Revas, Mandwa, Elephanta and Belapur are the locations the experts are looking at. Yacht operators welcomed the move; the yacht industry, including sports and leisure boats, in Mumbai alone is about Rs 400-crore with over 300 private boats.
Vikhe Patil said, “Recreation facilities like club house and water sports would be the main source of revenue in a project like this. It will obviously boost tourism.”
