200-berth marina expected to be given go-ahead later this year

India’s Maharastra Maritime Board plans to develop the first yacht marina in the Mubmai area. The Board which is responsible for over 720km of coast line including 114km around Mumbai, proposes that the 200-berth marina be sited at Mandwa, close to the Gateway of India.

The Board is currently awaiting the results of a feasibility study into the project but it expects the go-ahead to be given later this year. The anticipated cost of the marina is Rs200 crore (E37 million). A number of sites were considered but an earlier plan of having the marina at the Gateway caused much opposition from naval authorities and the Mumbai Port Trust.

Maintenance and fuel facilities are planned to be included at the marina and while the berth configuration still has to be finalised it is hinted that larger yachts, possible up to small superyacht size, will be catered for. The Board say the marina will allow them to better manage the movement of yachts in the Mumbai area as well as providing a tourist attraction.

India’s first marina opened two weeks ago at Kochi in the south-western state of Kerala. Mumbai has always been identified as a key location for a marina and IBI is aware that the Mumbai Port Trust is currently undertaking its own feasibility review of possible marina sites around the city. The Gateway may be one such site because of its central location and it is where a number of larger yachts visiting Mumbai anchor. The UK’s Marina Projects is understood to be one of the companies sharing in the marina sites review.

I hope this comes through. It would be a great opportunity for India to show its maritime power. Asia is a new force in the boating world. I recently shipped a boat to Thailand using Auto Shipping Network and they did a great job. If this marina comes through, hopefully India can be the next “to-go” place in the world. :)

I wish we had the government building marinas such as this one here in Israel, I guess it is too costly for us, although they are talking about building an island marina in front of the Israeli coast, but thats only a plan the the Israeli triple seas canal.
