You have made a serious investment in your boat or vessel and you’ll want to protect your asset.

What to insure for?

Why pay for boat insurance cover you don’t need? Make sure you get the right plan based on your requirements and usage. With most companies today, YOU choose the level of insurance cover which best suits how you use your boat.

What is covered?

Check that your policy covers damage to the craft not only in the water, but also when you are road towing, launching and recovering. Look out for sails and personal effects on the policy, are these covered?

Theft

Check that you are covered for theft of your boat and trailer but again not only from your permanent place of storage such as your garage, but also for theft from a temporary residence or indeed from a launch site or beach (believe us, it does happen). Make sure your trailer is insured both with your craft and when it is left at a launch site.

Liability

Apart from damage / theft think about your liability to others.

Most marine insurance policies cover Third Party risk for £2,000,000 – do not consider anything less!! Third Party claims can run into millions (you never know what or who you might hit). Also make sure that the third party cover applies when the craft is racing, as this is the most likely occasion when a collision will occur with another party.

Lock it

Security is paramount at all times. Wheel clamps, Hitch Locks, Hardened steel chain or multi-strand stainless steel wire cable are all useful to protect your kit and if your craft is not at its permanent place of storage, securely lock it to an immovable object.

Proof of insurance

Sailing clubs insist that all members carry adequate insurance cover and request that members sign a declaration to confirm that your craft is covered. Should you take the boat abroad then most foreign yacht clubs will request to see proof of insurance, your insurance provider can issue you with this proof on request.

Foreign Use?

In case you do plan to make a trip outside your country’s waters, it is advisable you sign up for insurance for that voyage, again based on YOUR requirement.

Finally, buy the best insurance cover, do not take risks with lower limits of indemnity. Get trained, think about security and get out there and enjoy the water.
