Chennai could soon be the yachting destination of India. Yes its true, the Chennai Port trust is planning a ‘yacht marina’ which will be operational by this year end. The marina is set to come up along a 200-metre stretch in the Boat Basin area in the west quay. The main aim of the marina is to build the tourism in Tamil Nadu.

“Nearly 15,000 sq m will be available once the old warehouse is dismantled. There will be amenities, such as lockers and rest rooms, for yachting enthusiasts,” port engineers said.

“We are planning the mini Marina on an outlay of Rs 1 crore. More than a dozen yachts and sailing boats can avail of the facility at a time. We will later expand and create a larger Marina once the coal loading activity is shifted out of the area. We will get close to 35 hectares of land for the project, which could be developed on a build-operate-transfer mode,” said CPT chairman K Suresh.

It is said that ocean blue has shown keen interest in participating in the marina project. Ocean Blue in the past has also created the marina at Kochi for the Volvo Ocean Race.

The mini Marina will have facilities, which are a mesh of the old and the new, and wharfing would be modular in nature. Ready-made jetties would be installed and wharfing will be mainly wood-based, with a plastic base for buoyancy and supported by an aluminum frame.

The east coast of India has never really been a hot bed for the luxury yachting industry as local govt  has not been able to support the industry as well as compared to their counterparts in the west.
