2009 World Match Racing Tour – Schedule announced!!
The World Match Racing Tour has announced its schedule of events for 2009, the total prize purse for the 2009 Tour season now stands at over $1.5 million, the largest in the sport.
The overall winner of the Tour will be crowned 2009 ISAF Match Racing World Champion.
The World Championship will again receive worldwide television coverage with 10 shows broadcast to over 15 international networks reaching over 600 million homes in 90 countries.
“2009 will be a very exciting series for the World Championship”, commented Tour Director, Craig MITCHELL “We are truly the only global sailing series at this level of competition. At the end of the year the World Champion will have had to master seven different types of yacht in nine different venues against the best skippers in the world.”

The current ISAF Match Racing World Champion is Ian WILLIAMS (GBR) (Bahrain Team Pindar). In addition to the nine events that make up the World Championship, the tour will also be announcing the schedule for 18 tour qualifying events and the eight World Tour Cards in the coming weeks. Each Tour stage will have two qualifying events from which the winning teams will earn an entry into the main Tour event.
We hope that India too some day will be host to this prestigious championship. Match racing is not a new concept in India and is practiced regularly even during the monsoon season. Infact according to their website there will be a ‘Mumbai international match race’ which will be held between 26 Jan – 30 January 2009 in Mumbai.
