Sailing – The next ‘in’ thing for kids in Mumbai!
Mumbai is an island… imagine the opportunities for water related sports & activities. Sailing is becoming a popular sport slowly but surely! Keeping in mind the spirit of Mumbai, we propose to promote the spirit of sailing amongst children… the next in thing for Kids in Mumbai..
We at Giira have extensive coverage on children & sailing in the articles compiled below. And we mean to push the sport for its excellent qualities! It’s a sport meant for one tough gazooka.. its ALSO surprising to see so many girls on the waters. Sun or rain.. they remain! We have interviewed some kids who have graduated from optimist sailing & now gear themselves to compete in the Olympics! They are under 18, but for the next games will be ready to compete …and win!
There are sailing events held (optimist regattas) and children from all over India come to participate.. but the sport is hardly covered. Giira strives to do it’s best to cover, promote & encourage the sport amongst kids..

Times of India – What’s Hot! – We speak of youth sailing in the city!
Parents:
‘I am not a sailor, but I want my son to be one. I wanted him to take up a sport that I knew nothing of. I want him to learn and master it on his own without any of my guidance.. so that he can do the same when it comes to taking up difficult tasks in his future!’
‘Sailing gives children a feeling of independence. It helps them realize and account for their own mistakes and failures. Since there is no one in the boat but them, the responsibility rests solely on them to make it to the finish line…to win!’
‘Sailing is all about tact! The child learns to maneuver the vessel according to the wind & tide. There is never a constant or standard situation. The scene is constantly changing & the child learns to adapt and sail along with the change. Thus the children learns to pick up lessons in sailing out of trial & error and are the sole fine-tuners or their own judgment.’
Below are a few links of posts covered & their synopsis – dedicated specially to children:

One Tough Gazookas- Personality of a Sailor Man !
a fun post on popeye & sailors!
His first words were in response to the question, “Are you a sailor?” Popeye smartly replied, “Ja think I’m a cowboy?”. Popeye the sailorman, with his muscles and his spinach, has since then, become a cultural icon.
Popeye served as a hero to many. With his stylish sense of humor and his positive outlook on life, he was a role model to young children too.
Ferretti v/s Ferrari: Why a Boat and not a Car !
talks about sailing & children, success & the adrenalin rush
“Sailing must be the most underrated sport of all time. Although it does not have the instant gratification of motorized sport sought by adrenaline junkies or the forced mate-ship of team games, sailing has long term rewards that far exceed either. Non-sailors seem to view sailing with suspicion as some mysterious art-form that must be passed on genetically. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
SAILING AND CHILDREN: Sailing is simply one of those life skills, like riding a bicycle or swimming. It can be learnt in an hour or two for sheer enjoyment or perfected through Olympic training. The level is up to the individual. I often hear about today’s kids being ADD, hyperactive or socially inept. Leave the Ritalin, play therapy & peer pressure behind & introduce them to sailing. They will seek their own pace and meet their own objectives. Sailing provides many challenges, great contentment and teaches the value of self discipline.
The Greatest Little Boat In The World !
talks about the optimist – where sailing begins…
The ‘Optimist‘ is quite simply the dinghy in which the young people of the world learn to sail. Sailed in over 110 countries by over 150,000 young people, it is the only dinghy approved by the International Sailing Federation exclusively for sailors less than 16 years of age.
The “Opti” as the young sailors fondly call her is the greatest little boat in the world.
a fun post on LEGO that makes toys for the waters!
LEGO even makes an extensive line-up of toys that are meant to be used in water or are replicas of what runs in the waters of the real world in their portfolio. On looking at some of these contraptions, it is simply wonderful how these shapes and colors converge from joining these small bricks and pieces. A mast there and a flag here are like the topping of the cake and make the toy absolutely desirous. From toy series’ that include ‘Viking Boat against the Wyvern Dragon’, Fireboat, a super-yacht in its bricky entirety to under-the-sea types like a ‘Crab Crusher’ and a ‘Deep Sea Treasure Hunter’…all can be your prized possessions thanks to LEGO.
Racing Coke Bottles: Getting Creative With Model Yachts
talks about making & sailing your own model yacht(toy boat) which teaches skills of full-scale sailing.
Courses on design and construction of simple model racing yachts, suitable for building by children are going to be the next in thing offered by hobby classes. Constructing a model yacht is an ideal way to build up skills in working with a range of materials – skills that may later be the basis of a career in engineering or manufacturing technology. It’s also, more importantly, fun.
how to make a basic model yacht.
Almost any kid can spend an afternoon fishing with a homemade pole on the banks of a river, or building dams, bridges and pools. It only takes a little bit of imagination to create a small raft to float in your backyard streams.
With some parental guidance and a chunk of balsa wood you can create a genuine craft to navigate that brook that will last for years to come. Follow this step-by-step guide and build your own floating masterpiece.
