Mishaps At Sea : SAFETY FIRST…
In the past few months there have been few major and minor accidents on the coast of India. Boats banging into each other, collision with rocks, mishandling of boats and several other such incidents. Who is to be blamed for such mishaps in which there is damage of millions of rupees? The answer is no one!

At present the Indian Yacht Industry is blooming and so are the number of yachts in the harbor. The main thing that is lacking is adequate infrastructure and proper trained staff. Cruising a yacht is more than just steering it and using the GPS for navigation. There is a lot more technical details to be followed while cruising the yacht at a great speed. Rocks, fishing trawlers, fishing nets are few major concerns while cruising around the Western Coastline.

To avoid such incidents it’s very important to have well trained staff on board. Accidents on water can be expensive and can cause loss of life too. People on board should follow safety measures ruled by the government. The life jackets are bulky and uncomfortable to wear, its very important to put them on while cruising at a high speed. At night one should cruise slow and be alert.

Such mishaps create a negative impression of the Yachting Industry. It leads to various talks in the industry which indirectly leads to several misunderstandings and complications between all involved. As said before, the infrastructure and the lack of trained staff is the main reason for such incidents and it should be corrected as soon as possible.

It’s very important for one to insure one’s water craft and renew the insurance at the stipulated time. Many don’t consider insuring important or they are not fully aware about it which is completely wrong. As mishaps can occur anytime/anywhere its very important to insure the yacht for person security.
IMPORTANT DO’S & DONT’S OF BOATING
1) Ensure that only trained personnel handle your boat at all times – on-shore or off-shore. This is the most important rule one should follow…
2) Give right of way to smaller boats.
3) Do not flock the slipway to board/ alight boats…time your arrival perfectly so that your boat does not add to the stalled traffic at the slipway.
4) Use only recommended products to maintain boats…use of wrong products could lead to untimely aging of your boat.
5) For long voyages, prepare before-hand and get a complete and clear idea of the course you plan to take. Sailing in the dark is meant for only a few experienced sea-men.
6) Safety equipment like life-jackets and floats are important – there are some nice and convenient ones that are not much of a pain to wear at all times when on-board. At night, make sure that your boat is lit enough to be noticed from a distance.
7) Speedboats, JetSkis etc should limit their speed as they approach areas close to the shore/ beaches.
Make sure that you have complete information on how to use the fish-finder, SONAR, RADAR and depth-finders – these equipments though expensive are able to give you the best idea of things you can’t see or fore-see.
9) The environment is the most important resource for all humans…judicial use of your boat and care taken while driving adds value to your life and keeps the environment safe for everyone.
10) Don’t let the excitement or the haste of getting on the waters spoil your experience…even the finest wines taste best when you sip them slowly…

It’s always sad to see a yacht end up like that. Hopefully their operators lived to learn their lesson.
