It was a honor meeting the young dynamic sailor Xerxes Bamboat at the Royal Bombay Yacht Club for a short interview. Friendly, mischievous, ambitious by nature, he is all set to make big in the laser class sailing championship. Xerxes plans to represent India in the 2012 Olympics using the ASIAN GAMES 2010 as a stepping stone. We wish him lots of luck and look forward to see a Gold around his neck.

What does sailing mean to you?
Sailing is a very significant part of my life and it I feel very passionate about it. I’ve been sailing since I was very young and I love the freedom, the thrill and the adrenalin rush one experiences when out on the open ocean racing. I love the water splashing on my face, the wind and waves. I think its really cool to be able to generate pretty high speeds with the help of the wind and not with the help of some machine. Sailing is in my blood and the feeling is invigorating.

Which was the best sailing championship you ever took part in? and why was it the best?
The best sailing championship that I have ever taken part in was The Asian Games 06′.It was the best and the toughest because only the top sailors from each country were there and if you lost your concentration for even a few moments you would probably lose 2-3 positions.I also think that this championship taught me a lot and will help me overcome the hurdles in the future.

How do you manage to give time to sailing and studies?
In my school life I used to practice every weekend in the afternoons. I would practice everyday for two weeks before every major championship. Now that I am in college I cannot practise as much but I try to make it whenever I am free.

If there one thing you would like to change in the sailing industry in India, what would that be?
Instead of seeing so many speedboats on the water I would prefer it if there were more sailing yachts so as to increase the fleet, thus encouraging people to buy more sailing boats rather than speed boats.

If you ever had to buy a sail boat of your own, which one would it be? Why?
If I had to buy a boat it would be a J-24 because we are developing a fleet, its fast ,easy to handle and big enough to take my friends out on it.

Which is your favourite sailing destination in India?
Goa would be my favourite sailing destination because of its holiday atmosphere, the lovely beaches and the cheap Beer…lol!

Where do you see yourself five years down the line?
In five years I hope to be selected to represent India at the Olympics.

Have you ever thought of Sailing round the world?
Not really but I guess it would be fun at some stage!
