The Greek island of Santorini, Greece is located in the Cyclades islands, in the Aegean Sea, in the Mediterranean. Santorini Island with Mykonos, is the most famous holiday destination. It is a small group of volcanic islands and its name was given by the Venetian in reference to Saint Irene.
The island was also the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions . What remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera. The island of Santorini is related to the myth of Atlantis…



According to Greek mythology, Atlantis was an ancient island (dating back to at least 1400 BC) in the Mediterranean Sea near what we now know as Greece. Poseidon, who was god of the sea and brother to Zeus (the top god in Greek mythology), appointed his son Atlas as ruler of Atlantis. The vast island prospered as a peaceful, wealthy, powerful and sophisticated place.

Unfortunately all this good fortune made Atlantis’s people feel superior and had them acting spoiled and even lazy. Such behavior angered the gods, who decided to punish Atlantis by destroying it with the power of earthquakes and volcanoes. At the end of one day and one night Atlantis was flooded and buried beneath the ocean, never to be seen again.

The island of Greece, Santorini, is considered as one of the most beautiful islands and has many beaches. The most famous are Perissa, Kamari and the Red Beach.
Perissa and Kamari have a large and endless black sandy beach while the famous Red beach of Greece is composed of black and red volcanic rocks.

The island of Santorini is mostly known for its incredible villages. The traditional villages are like most of the villages of the Cyclades with the difference that they are perched on the top of impressive cliffs. They offer incredible views over the volcano, the sunset and Thirassia. The most famous villages of the islands are Oia and Fira.
